Information for lawyers providing duty lawyer services at specific courts

Changes to the duty lawyer service are now in place at all district courts in the Auckland metropolitan area, ie Auckland, Manukau, North Shore, Papakura, Pukekohe and Waitakere. Changes are also in place at the Wellington, Lower Hutt and Porirua district courts.

In mid May 2011 duty lawyer changes will also be introduced at the Hamilton District Court alongside expansion of the Public Defence Service. Implementation of duty lawyer reforms alongside introduction of the Public Defence Service that were planned for Christchurch in mid 2011 have been deferred.

Public Defence Service-employed duty lawyer supervisors are now working across all the Auckland metropolitan courts.

The changes are designed to ensure defendants receive a consistent high quality duty lawyer service that is a major contributor to a more efficient summary court process.
